One question that we have heard over the last year is “why should I join the Des Moines Cycle Club”? We always had lots of valid responses like; free hamburger picnics, weekly rides, great social events, informative website and great speakers at our events. But the question still kept being asked and we’re a club who listens to its members.
So for 2009 along with all of the already mentioned benefits and much more, with your paid membership you’ll receive some pretty impressive swag. Like a this 13″ x 16″ DMCC Logo’d backpack. It’s great for carrying around the extra stuff that all cyclists never seem to have room for. And it’s perfect to use as a helmet bag or a cycling shoe bag to store and protect those expensive items when not in use.
If that’s not enough, the bags are stuffed with lot’s of other free stuff like gift certificates to local bike shops and businesses for discounts and other free stuff. Also the bags will include club gear like temporary DMCC tattoos and stickers so you can proudly let other bikers know you belong to the DMCC. Don’t ask, you can’t buy this stuff, it’s only for members of the Des Moines Cycle Club so signup today for the entire 2009 season and the good news is memberships are only $20 per person or $30 for the entire family.

We promised you the most informative night ever and boy did we deliver. Everyone who attended the Des Moines Cycle Club’s Annual Banquet heard from local and state cycling leaders about the latest happenings. Mark Wyatt, the director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Carl Voss the chairman of the Trails and Greenways Advisory Committee gave wonderful speeches about what their organizations are accomplishing and their plans for the coming year.
The most inspirational speech of the night was from Jim Hallihan, executive director of the Iowa Sports Foundation. Jim reminded all of us that the most important thing in competition and in life is to have fun. A lessen all of us need to re-learn from time to time.
There are a lot of people to thank for making this evening such a huge success. Our new club VP Georgie Pease deserves our gratitude for leading the team that put this night together. Kris Harrison and Dave Milburn did a ton of leg work getting everything to come together. Sleepy Hollow was a great location on a cold and rainy night. The food, cake and drinks were all outstanding and made the night one we will not all soon forget.

Explore the amazing ability of the human brain to overcome adversity, accomplish the near-impossible, and power each of us to victory and success in life. Follow cyclists racing in the Tour De France in hair raising crashes, dramatic battles over the Alps and Pyrenees and action-packed descents down steep mountain roads. Their ultimate goal? The finish line on the Champs-Elysees in Paris! Through a combination of digital animation, personal stories and unprecedented giant screen footage, this film will entertain and inspire audiences of all ages.
In what could be Des Moines biggest cycling event ever, the DMCC’s Annual Members Banquet is packed full of information about what’s happening and what’s new in Des Moines cycling.
We’ve assembled all of the people who have been at the forefront of this year’s most important cycling issues including Mark Wyatt, the executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition who has lead of all of the issues concerning Iowa counties this past year. Carl Voss will update us on what’s happening with Iowa trails, what’s open, what’s next and what’s fixed. These two alone would fill an exciting evening but we’re also pleased to have as our Keynote Speaker Jim Hallihan, the executive director of the Iowa Sports Foundation. Jim is the former assistant basketball coach under the fabled Johnny Orr at ISU. Jim is a leading figure behind some of Iowa’s most important fitness programs such as the Iowa Games and Lighten up Iowa. Jim and the ISF are carrying their message nationwide. Jim will inspire us, and inform us with his stories of the past and future.

One comment I hear now and then is “The Des Moines Cycle Club, aren’t you guys that race team”? Although it’s true, the DMOS Race Team is a part of the club it’s not what we’re all about. Most of our members don’t race but simply enjoy riding their bike. We’re working hard supporting, sponsoring and participating in everything cycling in the Des Moines Metro area. This club has members with a lot of different goals and interests. So if you like to ride around the block or around the world we need you to join us and help support the sport we love.
Next month, the evening of November 10th we’ll be holding our Annual Members Meeting. Keep checking back here for more information. Please join us for the most informative and inspirational meeting you’ll ever attend about Des Moines cycling. And if you’d like to really put your time where your heart is, we’ll be voting for next years DMCC Board Members. We always are looking for new board members, especially those with expertise in finding sponsors, legal help and just a simple understanding of what the rest of us feel about cycling.
Get involved, join in now………………….

Who says you can’t have a Gala at a bike shop? The DMCC not only proved it’s possible, but that it’s a lot of fun. Even though it was raining outside we had a good turnout and I very much appreciated the chance to meet a great many of you. And it was a very interesting seeing a lot of you for the first time when you weren’t wearing Lycra. I must say you clean up very well! From the emails I’ve received and comments from members, I’m sure we’ll be making this an annual event.
Thanks to everyone who attended and to all of your board DMCC members for making it happen.

In order to provide a packet to all paid members in 2009 we’ve found it necessary to increase membership fees from $15 individual and $20 family to $20 individual and $30 family. The DMCC member packs will include ID Card, stickers and other great club gear.
We’re still a great deal! Our income is provided almost solely by our membership fees and we want to continue to provide our members with the wonderful free events, rides and instruction that you’ve come to expect. For 2009 we want to do an even better job by sponsoring major rides and events. Everyone who renews or signs up online now will be charged the new fees. All signups are for 2009 membership.

A great time was had by all at the Annual Midwest Tandem Rally held this year in Springfield Illinois. This was the first time that we’ve attended this event. I was first of all struck by how hard the ride was and it was amazing seeing all of the two seat-ers and even longer, one was a five seat-er.
Springfield is the home of Lincoln with many historical sites to see. Including a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
