Des Moines Cycle Club

The Des Moines Cycle Club and the City of Clive are happy to announce a new event for for all levels of cyclists. Ride’n Green to the Farmers Market is a weekly ride starting at the Clive Aquatic Center parking lot at 1801 N.W. 114th St., pedaling down the trail system to the very popular Des Moines Farmer’s Market. A relaxed pace will take us the 12 miles to downtown. We’ll start promptly at 8:00 A.M. so please be ready to ride.

The leader will spend one to two hours at the market and will lead those who want to return, or if you’d like, return on your own. We plan to park our bikes around the Polk County building on Court Avenue, there are lots of posts and trees to lock your bike.

Riding your bike to the market will be great exercise, you’ll get a little sun, and meet other riders in the area. If you’re new to the metro, or new to cycling, Ride’n Green is right for you. You’ll also feel great about doing the ride GREEN. Be sure to wear your DMCC backpack to safely transport all of your purchases on the return trip. In the future we hope to add other cities to the ride, we want to see more bikes than cars at the market!

Cyclists will ride to the Iowa Capitol on Wednesday, April 15 at 5:30 PM in opposition to the violent crashes and road rage incidents that have occurred this spring. The ride will begin in the parking lot of Rasmussen’s Bike Shop at 301 Grand Ave in West Des Moines. The ride follows a crash near Winterset, where the driver of a truck pulling a trailer passed too closely to a group of cyclists, ran over one cyclist with his trailer and left the scene. Cyclists report the motorist was honking constantly as he passed and returned to the scene 30 minutes later.

Another crash this year involved Ken Sherman. Sherman was riding through an intersection in Des Moines when a car failed to yield to the oncoming cyclist and collided with Sherman causing injuries. The Des Moines Police failed to issue any citations following the incident, but determined the motorist to be at fault.

The Iowa Legislature considered clarifying the Iowa Code to specify passing distances and safe following distances for bicyclists. The bill failed to be considered through the funnel date despite passing in the Senate.

Whether or not new laws were enacted, cyclists still have the same rights and duties of the drivers of motor vehicles as specified in the Iowa Code. Incidents where cyclists are injured due to the inattentiveness of motorists are irresponsible and should be cited by police as appropriate. Incidents where cyclists are harassed or intimidated intentionally are violent and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

All DMCC Members,

With spring in the air and all that our club has going on, it’s important that we all stay in touch. We have several outlets like a great website, blog and email system but did you know that our club has a Yahoo Group? I’ll take the blame, but we haven’t been using the Group to it’s potential. A Yahoo Group enables you to communicate with other club members about club topics that you wish to discuss. Also, organizations like the Iowa Bike Coalition can use our Yahoo Group to release their latest information.

There is already over 100 members in the group, it’s easy to join. So take a few minutes and sign-up and join in on the discussion. Go to http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DMCycleClub/ The site is monitored and only cycling and club related topics are accepted, so it’s a great way to see what’s new.

Also part of the Yahoo Group is a calendar, this calendar will soon be the official club ride calendar. I’ve started adding club rides and will add more as we get them scheduled.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 2, 2009)— USA Cycling recently recognized 13 regional athlete development programs with $20,000 worth of cash grants through its Centers of Excellence program, the national governing body has announced.

Funded by the USA Cycling Development Foundation, the grants were awarded to programs that meet specific structural requirements as non-profit organizations governed by a board of directors with the potential and ability to develop athletes into international-level competitors. The list of recipients again includes several first-time winners along with programs who continue to be recognized for their efforts toward the development of young cyclists.

USA Cycling recognizes the outstanding work of these Centers of Excellence as they continue to grow the model of athlete development in cycling and contribute to the elevated levels of competition and growth of the sport in the United States.

Or should I say we’ve got a raccoon by the tail? If there was any doubt that your Des Moines Cycle Club was serious about promoting and growing our passion in the Des Moines Metro, 2009 should be the proof. Last week we announced our plans to host a major new ride called Tour the Raccoon, you can read the details on the home page. Your board of directors has shown a lot of vision, determination and given a lot of their time. Sure it’s a labor of love, we’re learning a lot and we enjoy working together and this is just the start. Early in the fall we’ve got another event that we plan to host, so we’re not stopping now.

To pull all of this off we’re going to need support from individuals, organizations, companies and city and government agencies but so far the support has been very positive. If you’d like to get involved, as an individual or maybe convince your company to sponsor our club or rides just let us know.

The Tour the Raccoon is patterned as a one night Ragbrai, an event we all know very well. It’s for those of us that can’t take an entire week off of work or the many riders who don’t like to ride on the streets. And don’t be fooled, Jefferson is hosting their Bell Tower Festival this same weekend so there will be plenty or opportunities to have a great time. As we learned during Ragbrai, Jefferson knows how to throw a party.

The goal of the Des Moines Cycle Club is to support area cycling on all levels. The Des Moines Bike Collective is a new organization with some pretty cool goals of refurbishing good used bikes and make them available for long term loan or purchase at a reasonable price in our community. They also plan to conduct classes in area schools and youth organizations on bike safety and training and generally promote and encourage cycling as viable healthy transportation.

I want to not only wish them success but to put my own money towards their future. Today I’m donating $100 to the Des Moines Bike Collective and I’m asking you, if you can, to do the same or give whatever you can afford. It’s easy, just go to the following link: http://dsmbikecollective.org/donate You can pay by credit card or use your PayPal account and it is tax deductable. For more information about The Collective visit their website at http://dsmbikecollective.org/home.
